Discussion Meeting with Parents and Players

A reminder to all players and their parents that there is a meeting in the school hall on Thursday 24th July at 5:30pm. This meeting has been bought about by the lack of commitment from the players. I look forward to meeting with you all and hopefully coming up with some ideas as to how we can move forward and prevent this from happening next year. To put this into context we don't have a team for this Saturday's crucial home game against Aorere College at this stage!

Papatoetoe 31 - Howick 20

Another slow start and lack of respect for the ball meant that we made life hard for ourselves again. It was pleasing to see that again when we stuck to our game plan and moved the ball instead of individuals thinking they could/should do everything we were really dangerous on attack. We need to step up again this weekend and really send a message to Macleans. They won't give you any respect so you need to go out and demand it from them. Be hard and agressive in all that you do and at the end of the game you will have their respect i have no doubt about that.

Well done for sticking with it this week and getting a win in what turned out to be a tough game!

Well done Danny for being named Player of the day.

Papatoetoe 25 Avondale 10

Well what a difference a week makes!! This was a different team to the one that faced Edgewater a week ago. There was urgency, passion, commitment and accuracy in this performance that had been missing in the previous game. Our scrum once again showed how strong it can be against a big Avondale pack, our lineout again worked well. With the backs finally moving the ball around the space was there for some strong running from the centres who were well supported by the wings. You should all now believe in what we are trying to achieve as you have now shown that you are capable of reaching the levels we are asking from you!! Well done! Also well done to Inoke for a great all round performance resulting in him being named Player of the day!!

Papatoetoe 10 - Edgewater 14

So the season has begun..... a disappointing start to our campaign in a game that we should have won. We didn't really start to play with any urgency until the last 5 minutes by which time it was too late. Hopefully you have all learnt from yesterdays game and we can move forward positively in training next week. When we did start to play we showed how dangerous we can be with strong breaks from the backs and strong ball carrying from the forwards. Our scrum showed up strongly which was pleasing to see. Lots to work on this week but you've set yourselves a marker now from which we can move forwards next weekend. The most pleasing aspect was your commitment at the end of the game, i think this is something that we can really build on through this season.

Well done to Harry for being named Player of the Day.

Sami Tu'itupou Try v Hilary

Sami Tu'itupou scores a great wingers try against Hillary College at the Coca Cola Cup. Great Skills Sami - Well done!

Coca Cola Cup Review

Well it was a long day with many of you playing nearly 2 full games in the course of one day. There were many positives to come out of the day, for many of you your fitness levels looked really good, there are still a couple of people who need to take some responsibility for improving their fitness levels as they are letting their team mates down. We finally showed how dangerous we can be with ball in hand when we spread the ball through our backs. Our speed to the breakdown and ball retention were also very good. Sadly a few games went against us based on our own mistakes if we had kicked our conversions and penalty goals we would have beaten Aorere and Hillary. If our lineouts had been accurate we would have had even more possession to use through our backs. These are all things that individuals and units need to go away and work on not only in practice but also in your own time.

The season starts next weekend with a game against Edgewater (Away). All the lessons we have learnt from all our pre season games must be put into practice starting with training on Tuesday! We have had more pre season games than any other school in our competition and therefore we are better prepared its just about putting the polishing touches to things this week. I'm looking forward to this season and i'm excited about the game next week. It's time for the practice to stop and the competition to start! So my Spartan Warriors lets go to war!

Monday Meeting

Meeting in G1 at Lunchtime on Monday, the matches that were taped on wednesday will be shown.

Also this week, mouthguards and boots (must not be missing any sprigs) must be brought to practices.

Have breakfast and a good dinner the night before practices.

1st XV Haka

At the top of Rangitoto Island Summit

Rangitoto Trip

Well wasn't that an enjoyable way to finish off our Pre-Season training. For the 16 of you that made the effort to turn up, thank you. Over the last 3 days i've really noticed the huge improvements we've made as a squad since the first weekend in January! There seems to be a good team spirit amongst you and that togetherness is going to be a crucial part in our success this year. The fitness levels are looking good, we'll continue working on them once a week as i know they can be even better. I want us to be able to completely dominate teams until they lose interest and don't want to play against us. We want to create a fear of coming to play at Papatoetoe and if the hard work from the last 4 months is anything to go by i know we can do it. You have done yourselves proud with all your hard work so far, and it has been a pleasure to put you through the pre season program which i hope you have enjoyed!! Now the real hard work starts, i'm excited about the future for this team! I hope you are too!!! (photos from today to follow)

Wednesday Training - Feedback

A nice relaxing session today but one that I found very useful. The lineout session was exceptional which was really pleasing to see. I know the backs will have learnt a lot from having a session with our technical advisor!! The little team run we had at the end was one of the best i've seen. Well done!

Make sure you get some rest ready for tomorrow. I hope you are all looking forward to it!!

Tuesdays Training - feedback

Great effort and attitude displayed by everyone today. Well done to Shawn for being the first one back!! That is probably the hardest some of you will have ever pushed yourselves so you just need to remember today and what you have acheived during the season when things feel like they're getting tough!! Well done and see you tomorrow.

Tuesdays Training

So a scouting mission of tomorrows venue reveals the following:

A lovely 5k run through lush green forest and countryside with a few small hills thrown in to keep you on your toes!! The run will be a team race Gladiators v Spartans!! The same teams will compete in the Rangitoto run on Thursday!! Teams will appear on here at a later time.

Following the race we will continue in our quest for fitness with a series of drills in the pleasant surrounds of Hunua Falls. The day will be finished with an optional swim in the falls.

It should be a great day of training just make sure you bring a positive attitude and understand why we're doing this. The benefits I promise will be worth the effort!

Holiday Training

Just a reminder to all, first training day of the holidays is tomorrow. We are leaving school at 9am which means you need to be at school by 8.50 at the latest! Make sure you bring your running shoes and some water - your going to need it!!!

Wednesday we're training at school, not as intense as Tuesday or Thursday but very focussed team sessions. We'll go through the video of the last game and really work hard on the timing of our set plays and team attack. Training starts at 9am!

Thursday we head to Rangitoto! Meet at Papatoetoe train station at 8am MacManager will meet you there, then head into town on the train where we will catch the ferry over to the island. Remember there are only 2 ferries back to the city from the island so it will be a great opportunity to really see who can push themselves past a little bit of pain!!

Alfriston game - Result 19-18 Win for Papatoetoe

Well the 1st win of the season. I wonder how everyone felt after the game?? I would be really interested in hearing how you felt it went....i'm sure some of it will come out on Wednesday at training when we go through the video.

At times we were good sometimes very good, other times not so good. Watching from the sides the abundance (that means amount!!) of talent that is in this side is staggering. I can't wait for the game when things click as you will be unstopable!!

Our Lineouts went well again, they are starting to become a real weapon for us, our scrum showed that it can be dominant but i think there is a lot more to come in that department!! Backs started to show what we can do when we get the ball which was pleasing.

Standout performances on the day: Sipu, Greg, Amato, John (Tito)

Well done, and lets look forward to some real hard quality work next week.

Condor 7's

Despite being let down by a number of players who failed to turn up on the day we took a squad of 11 to the national 7's competition on Sunday 13th April. A tough draw in all the rounds made life difficult but once again the improvement was there for all to see. Everytime we take the field all of you are making improvements which is so pleasing to see. It's important that you can see this and not let the results get you down at this stage in the season. I am increasingly confident about our prospects this season based on the improvements that i've seen since we started. Standout players on the day - Greg Foe and Chris Kumar - well done boys for a great days work. (Photos to follow) Also a big thanks to the few parents that made the effort to come and support for the day. The weather wasn't great so the support was greatly appreciated!!

Cook Island Game

This was always going to be a tough fixture, but with the result not something that interested us it provided an excellent opportunity to continue working on our defense. For 50 mins our defense was outstanding, yes they scored but I would happily bet anyone that with that defense we won't meet anyone in the competition that would be able to score against it. The key now is to make sure that we use the ball effectively when we win the ball. Our next target is the game against Alfriston on the 17th. For the first time in our pre season games the target is to win! Our aggression levels at the breakdown must increase considerably if we are to compete this season. I am confident that we will win on Thursday and then we can head into the season on a high. Well done for a fantastic effort lads!! Also great work McCookin - food was awesome!! (photos to follow)

Game against St Peters

Well the game against St Peters was definately a learning experience and showed just how much hard work we have still got to do!! There were significant improvements in some areas of our performance such as Lineout, Ball Retention, Scrum (when we worked at it). However our defence probably slipped a little from last week. I'm really hoping that it opened some peoples eyes to the work that we have to do over the next six weeks but also that it gives you some confidence that we can succeed this season!! Keep working hard boys!!

It was always entered with the idea that it was a fitness exercise and i think in those terms it was very useful. I think we showed esepecially in the last game just how dangerous we can be when we keep the ball in hand and i thought the fitness work that we've been doing has really shown through both at the 7's and against Aorere College. Photos will follow shortly.

Captain for 2008 Announced

The captain for the 1st XV for 2008 will be Sipu Latu. Congratulations Sipu on being selected for this role. Both myself and Mr Gall believe that you will lead the team from the front and will prove to be an inspirational leader for the rest of the players. Well done.

Trial Games Squads

The squads for the 1st game against Aorere College appear below. They will also appear on the notice board outside my office. Please encourage your friends and family to come and watch the game. I really want to create a real atmosphere at our home games this year and this is a great opportunity to start that off. Remember this is a trial game and a cut will be made from the squad after the match so it is vital that you give it everything. Don't forget what we set out at the beginning of the year, performance around school is just as important as performance at training in terms of selection!!

Athletics..........

Great effort by everyone in the 3000m it was really pleasing to see the times that everyone posted and the effort that was put in. We'll be running the test once more just before the start of the season so lets make sure we keep working hard to get those times down even more. Athletics day was also pleasing especially the Snr boys 100m final which saw 5 members of the 1st XV training squad competing. Congratulations to all those involved, I thought you represented the team exceptionally well.
