Papatoetoe through to Eden Park final...

Papatoetoe High booked their place in a final showdown with Onehunga at Eden Park next week with a commanding performance against St Pauls at Papatoetoe today. The weather conditions weren't ideal however credit must go to the Papatoetoe groundsman who had prepared an outstanding pitch for the game to be played on.

Papatoetoe controlled the first half and kept St Pauls penned in their own half. Losing a player to the sin bin didn't help St Pauls and they were unable to get their strong running game going that had been so evident in the last fixture between the two teams.

Two tries to Papatoetoe from TJ Hopoi and captain Greg Foe helped put some breathing space between the two teams before the Papatoetoe team switched off and allowed St Pauls two easy tries which bought the game to 16-13. Awake again Papatoetoe controlled the territory and showed great discipline to move steadily ahead.

An outstanding team effort sets up the chance to even the score with Onehunga at Eden Park next Saturday!

Photo's from Macleans game

Papatoetoe 19 Macleans 5

Papatoetoe secured a home semi final clash with St Pauls on the back of an outstanding defensive effort. It was always going to be a game in which both teams were going to have to contend with a strong wind blowing down the pitch. Macleans played with the wind at their back in the first half and tried to keep Papatoetoe pegged into their own 22. Inaccurate kicking and a slow kick chase hampered their tactics however and Papatoetoe were able to go in at half time at 0-0. With the wind now at their backs Papatoetoe were able to execute a strong kicking game and keep Macleans under pressure. When the opportunities arose the home team executed well and scored three good tries two of which were superbly converted from the sideline.

This was a much improved performance from the Papatoetoe team and allows them to move forward into their semi final next week full of confidence. Man of the Match went to outstanding half back Sami Tu'itupou.

Photo's from Onehunga game

Papatoetoe 10 Onehunga High 23

This was a timely wake up call for the Papatoetoe team, that at this stage in the season not being accurate at set piece will be punished. This was certainly the case this week where the Onehunga lineout controlled both their own and Papatoetoe possession. With the little ball that Papatoetoe had they showed that they were more than competitive. At half time Onehunga were ahead 5-3 and the game was in the balance however it was evident that Onehunga were hungrier for the result and they gradually started to pull away. Papatoetoe finished strongly however it was too late to affect the score.

This result leads Papatoetoe into their last home game of the season against Macleans in what will be a must win game for the home team. The destiny of the team is now firmly in their hands, they have shown when they play to their full ability they are amongst the strongest in the competition however they need to be consistent in their performances.

Photos from Mt Roskill game

Papatoetoe 29 Mt Roskill Grammar 8

This was the sternest test that Papatoetoe had been given so far this season. Mt Roskill applied pressure through winning the battle of the breakdown and turning over a healthy percentage of Papatoetoe ball. Papatoetoe made far too many basic errors for the players to be happy with their work however they did show flashes of what they are capable of. Nano Kalauta showed just how strong a runner he is scoring two tries. The mid season break comes at a good time for the Papatoetoe players allowing them to recharge the batteries before their next challenge...Onehunga on the 31st July.

Photos from Mangere game

Papatoetoe 29 Mangere 5

The first game in the championship round saw Papatoetoe welcome Mangere College to their Nicholson Avenue ground, a ground that has only seen 1 defeat for the home team in 2 years. The match started in unusual circumstances with Mangere not on the field the game started resulting in an easy 7 points for Papatoetoe. Possible the quickest try to be scored in Auckland rugby this year! Mangere had a good tight driving game but got little change out of the aggressive papatoetoe forward pack. With Papatoetoe controlling the possession as the game went on they were able to score several well constructed tries. Gaining the bonus point win will help Papatoetoe along the path to the semi finals greatly.

Photos from Hillary game

Papatoetoe 54 Hillary College 0

A return to the outstanding College Rifles playing surface meant that despite the weather the supporters were guaranteed to see some running rugby. Papatoetoe came into the game looking to put things right from a poor performance against St Pauls in the previous game. Right from the first whistle Hillary were under pressure and the first try was scored within the first 5 minutes.

Showing an ability to stick to the game plan which has been lacking many times this season Papatoetoe were able to keep the pressure on and scored with ease. The Papatoetoe front 5 worked hard at the set piece and created a good platform at the breakdown, with the backrow able to secure ball and this allowed the attack to be shifted to the wide channels. Mike Ki on his starting debut looks to be a promising player picking up two tries in an excellent start to his 1st XV career.

Other notable performers were Sione Tonga and Takeshi Faamasino. The Papatoetoe team can now look forward to the top 8 starting next week.

Photo's from St Pauls

Photo's from the game at St Pauls:

Papatoetoe 10 St Pauls 17

A disappointing performance from a Papatoetoe team that had faced a difficult week with off field incidents disrupting preparation for what should have been an opportunity to cement their position as the top team in Pool 1 of the 1B competition.

Papatoetoe showed an alarming disregard for their game plan and the result of this was that St Pauls were able to impose their style of rugby onto the game. Strong running from a number of the St Pauls players coupled with poor tackling from Papatoetoe meant that St Pauls were able to play the game in the Papatoetoe half for almost the entire game.

On a plus the backrow of Greg Foe, Taulima Latua and Sione Tonga is starting to really work well together and had an excellent game, also the goal kicking from James Faiva continued it's improvement and is starting to look like a real weapon.

The Papatoetoe players are going to need to look very closely at the performance in this game and answer some difficult questions to allow them to move forwards and challenge for the championship in the Top 8 that is fast approaching. This starts with the last game of the group stage against Hillary College on Friday 11th June at College Rifles RFC.

Papatoetoe 50 Marcelin 0

Played in surprisingly sunny conditions Papatoetoe welcomed Marcelin to their last home game of the 1st round of the 1B competition. It was expected to be a tough game and the first 15 minutes lived up to that expectation. Both sides had their chances however, poor execution and decision making from both teams meant that Papatoetoe went in at half time only 12-0 in front.
The halftime talk must of had an effect on the Papatoetoe team as they came out firing and scored almost at will. Excellent work at the set piece disrupted the Marcelin possession which caused a problem for the visitors.

Papatoetoe can now look forward to next weeks game v St Pauls in the clash of the two unbeaten teams left in the pool.

Papatoetoe 44 One Tree Hill 6

Played in perfect conditions on the Spectacular surface at College Rifles Papatoetoe produced a performance that showed that their hard work is starting to pay off.

The backs added width to their game and showed that when they play to their stregnths they are very hard to stop. The forwards produced a steady stream of fast ruck ball and this was used with great effect. It's pleasing to see the development in what the team are doing on a weekly basis. This was a win built on some solid work at the set piece with the scrum once again showing that it is going to be a weapon for the team this year.

Once again we had fantastic support from our parents and other supporters and for that we are really greatful! We look forward to seeing you next weekend!

Thank you to College Rifles for hosting us, we hope to come back and play on your $2 million surface again.

Photo's from Round 1 v Dilworth

Papatoetoe 27 Dilworth 8

A fine sunny day at Papatoetoe saw the start of the 2010 NZ Police 1B 1st XV competition. Dilworth came to Papatoetoe for the 1st time in 5 years on the back of 2 wins in the last 2 years.

Papatoetoe went into the game on the back of a successful pre season campaign and started positively. The Papatoetoe forwards took the game to Dilworth both in the scrums and at the breakdown and won plenty of front foot ball for the Papatoetoe backs to work with. The backs played with a lot more structure than had been seen at times in the pre season games and this allowed them to play in the right parts of the field.

It was a positive start for Papatoetoe although a number of tries went begging as the final pass went astray. These little errors will need to be cut out as the season progresses.

Player of the day: Inoke Latu.

Try Scorers were:
Sami Tu'itupou x 2
Sione Tonga
Inoke Latu

With James faiva adding a penalty and two conversions.

Papatoetoe 36 Cambridge 8

Another disappointing first half performance saw Papatoetoe having to take a big look at themselves at half time before they salvaged some pride with an improved performance in the second half. The scoreline indicates a dominant performance but once again Papatoetoe failed to complete strike moves in the red zone. Cambridge with a young team stuck to their task for the whole game and caused problems especially around the edges of the rucks where they caught the Papatoetoe defensive system sleeping several times.

Captain Greg Foe led from the front and was backed up in the forwards by Sione Tonga and Taulima Latu, whilst in the backs Henry Pouniu and Sam Tulemoe were the stand out performers. It was also pleasing to see Sami Tu'itupou and James Faiva come through their comeback game unscathed.

Once again a big improvement will be needed when Papatoetoe travel to take on Tauranga Boys on Tuesday in their last pre season game.

Papatoetoe 34 Takapuna Grammar 10

A much improved performance from Papatoetoe saw them post a convincing win over Takapuna Grammar. Played on the impressive Takapuna #1 ground in front of their school it was Takapuna that got on the scoresheet first. Going in at halftime only 12-10 in front it took stern words from the coaches to get the boys to the intensity needed. Replacing the whole front row was where it started from and the Papatoetoe forwards started to gain an advantage at the breakdown this led to a number of good tries throughout the 2nd half. The team is improving well as they move through the pre season campaign with only two games left before the competition starts.
